Whether you have been to San Miguel de Allende or not, you will return from this trip feeling relaxed, inspired and filled with the rich energy and flavor of Mexico!
We have 6 spots to join Hector Guerrero to discover this gorgeous and quaint colonial pueblo located in the Bajio Region of Mexico. Originally from Mexico City, but having lived in San Miguel for 6 years, Hector will take to you off the beaten path to discover the gems and magic of this special place.
They say there is a layer of rose quartz below the ground in San Miguel, with powerful energy as you could imagine. After living there, we know it's true. As San Miguel is the home to many adventurous and creative expats, it still holds strong the magic of the traditions and culture of Mexico, and is apparent all around-the beautiful locals, the food, the rich colors and textures of the architecture and landscape, deep history and so much more.
Hector will host this trip based out of one of our favorite B & B's in town, Casa de la Cuesta. The B & B features a beautiful Mask Museum-a collection of the owners' from years of visiting villages who make masks for ceremonial dances. The B & B is filled with wonderful folkloric art that the owners Heidi and Bill have collected for years.
This trip is a wonderful balance of all that we love in SMA. Hector is a chef and will host a cooking class one afternoon in the gorgeous kitchen of the B & B. Inspired by many forms of cooking in Mexico-including prehispanic, he will give you a wealth of knowledge of the history of dishes and ingredients. He will bring you to the lively markets to collect the ingredients. After cooking, you will enjoy a festive celebration to eat & drink your hard work.
One day will be pure relaxation swimming in paradise at one of the thermal pools outside of town. Order a piña colada poolside, and float. Weather averages around 75-82 degrees this time of year.
One day will be spent walking the Botanical Gardens (El Jardin Botanico-El Charco del Ingenio). The vast and breathtaking landscape of the Nature Reserve represents an immense collection of cacti and other Mexican plants, many of which are rare, or endangered. For those interested in a full moon temazcal (traditional sweat), we will return to the botanical gardens for the ritual and curative ceremony using aromatic herbs and steam that takes place in a sweat-lodge located in the ruins of the Hacienda Las Colonias in the northern part of the garden. Lead by an experienced 'temazcalero', this ceremony aims to connect us with the earth and our ancestors, and to let go of individuality for a moment and truly become one. If open to the power of this ceremony, it is a transformative and beautiful experience that I highly suggest to all. It certainly changed our lives while living in Mexico.
Hector will take you exploring-to all of the magical places we discovered while living there-the Ruins of La Virgin de la Cañada, to the local craft markets and gorgeous stores throughout town; to antique markets on the outskirts of town; to visit dear artisan friends. You will explore Pozos, Atotonilco, Dolores Hidalgo & Santa Rosa(pottery). For those interested we will take a hot air balloon over the magnificent landscape. Roaming around town to the many galleries and amazing restaurants. There will be a day trip to the city of Guanajuato, another amazing pueblo very close to San Miguel. Of course there will be some downtime and free time to return to favorite places or go for another swim. We know amazing masseuses, wonderful exercise classes, art classes, etc.. and would love to organize your trip according to your desires.
Here is a review from a client:
"I first met Hector at his private supper club in Portland, Chuparrosa. My first impression was how passionate he was about his food. His warmth as a host has always stuck with me.
I travel a lot to Mexico for my photography, and went last year to Oaxaca, where Hector was working with artisans, exploring the region, and cooking for locals and travelers. Hector was the perfect guide, so generous with his knowledge of the land and culture. Exploring the region with Hector, was like exploring it with a long lost friend.
If you don't have time to plan a trip, but want a rich and authentic experience in Mexico, I highly recommend this trip Hector is leading to San Miguel..... San Miguel alone is magical, but with Hector's intimate knowledge of his second home, it will no doubt be an unforgettable experience. Whether you are interested in the food, amazing sites, the glorious outdoors, or if you are an artist wanting fresh and rich inspiration, Hector will take you there. I promise you won't be disappointed." Calvin Chen
