We co host retreats taught by local and foreign artists, chefs, crafts people, herbalists, and more.  We work together to bring you daily classes based on that host's specialty.  Some days will be spent out and about exploring Oaxaca for inspiration, and other days in the studio at Casa del Quetzal, or the artis't studio creating.

Valle de Teotitlan: A Village of Zapotec Weavers

A small village in Oaxaca of Zapotec weavers.  In this workshop, learn how to dye wool, using/creating natural dyes from cochineal, indigo, various local fruits, nuts, herbs and flowers.  We offer workshops with a group of weavers for you and your group (minimum 2 people).  We suggest a five day class, 4-5 hours a day.  Or a three day class, full days.  They will teach you to weave rugs using their looms.  A wonderful and inspiring workshop!

San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca: Paper Making Workshop with Alberto Valenzuela at Papel Oaxaca

We offer workshops with the inspiring master paper maker Alberto Valenzuela at his incredible studio, Papel Oaxaca, in San Agustin.  An ongoing intention of Alberto is to inspire people and give them the tools to create paper and art using tools and materials around them.  Alberto primarily uses natural fibers abundant in Oaxaca; Ixtle (fiber of the Maguey plant), Platano (fiber of the Banana Tree ), and Cotton.  Alberto will give us a history of paper making and explanation of the fibers and process.

3 day workshop: 1,800 pesos/person (approximately $130.00 USD, depending on exchange rate)

In the 3 days with Alberto, we will take you to forage the fibers you will use to make your paper.  Then back to his ever inspiring studio (that he made by hand with a little help) to begin the process of making hand made paper.  Alberto will guide you, and explain the history of natural paper making.

At the end of each day, we will cook a lovely, fresh, healthy and delicious dinner for you and/or the group at our fonda Casa del Quetzal.  Please contact us for information about accommodations, but we highly recommend Casa Maria, across the street from us in San Agustin Etla.

If you are an artist, and would like to translate your work into a piece created with hand made paper, this is an interesting opportunity for you.  Alberto has worked with many artists, such as Francisco Toledo, to help translate visions and existing works of art into prints on hand made paper, books, journals, boxes, anything you can imagine.  Bring any work with you that you may want to use to create pieces with Alberto.  Please contact us for more information and pricing for this workshop.

 

Alibrijes: Workshop for Children  with Manos Creativas, Master Florencio Melchor 750 pesos/person (approximately $50 USD, depending on current exchange rate).  All materials included.

Alibrijes are brightly colored Oaxacan-Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures.  We invite you to spend a day at the studio of Manos Creativas, in San Martin Tilcajete, about 30 minutes outside of Oaxaca Centro.

Tour the vibrant studio filled with wild alibrije creatures!  We will have the carved, unpainted animals ready for the children.  They can choose their creature, and Florencio and Paula will guide them in painting techniques.

Working with Clay Workshop: with La Familia Martinez in Atzompa, Oaxaca: 1100 pesos/person (approximately $78 USD, depending on exchange rate).  Includes 2 kilos of clay (more available for purchase if desired) and lunch.  Discount offered for small groups.

The Martinez Family are from generations of families working with clay in Atzompa.  Today, Atzompa is known for it's Green Clay, which has become a very commercial product.  The Martinez Family are pushing their knowledge of the processes and designs to the next level.  They are extremely creative, while still utilizing traditional and natural processes. 

They are offering workshops to those interested in learning some of these traditional techniques.  They will show you and tell you about some of the history, and guide you in creating your own works in clay. 

Depending on the size of your pieces, you will need to be able to return to fire your pieces about 3-4 days after you make them.  They will need to dry completely before being fired.

Day 1: about 3-4 hours.  Introduction, creation of first pieces.

Day 2: about 2-3 hours.  Finishing up the details of your pieces.

Return about 3-4 days later to fire your pieces.  The process is beautiful!  This day will be about 4 hours.

The pieces are ready immediately for you to take home! 

If you would like to glaze or paint with natural pigments, they would be happy to add this on (for an additional fee).
